Different Grade of Concrete their Uses and Application:

Different Grade of Concrete:

The concrete achieve strength after 28 days of construction. it is denoted by “M” to the required strength in MPa. For instance, for a grade of concrete with 15 MPa strength, it will be denoted by M15, where M denotes for Mix.

There are different proportion for different concrete grades. For example, for M15 concrete, mix proportion will be 1:2:4 for cement: Fine Aggregate: coarse aggregates.

Selection of Concrete Grade for Construction:

concrete grade is selected in construction based on requirement of structural design. There are mainly two types of concrete that is given below:

  • Nominal mix
  • Design mix.

Nominal mix concrete:

This type of mix concrete is usually used for small scale construction and small structures such as small residential buildings where amount of concrete is not used at high quantity.

Design mix concrete:

This type of mix concrete is get from different lab tests. In selection of material, mixing, transportation and placement of concrete it needs good quality control. Design mix concrete provide mix proportions based on available material and design mix concrete also provide economy in construction if large scale concrete construction is used

Hence heavy projects where concrete is use in large number of quantity they use design mix concrete.

Therefore, acceptable grade of concrete can be selected based on requirements of structure. Nominal mixes for grades of concrete such as M15, M20, M25 are mostly used for small project in construction.

Heavy project structures needed high strength, therefore they go for higher grades of concrete that is M30 and above. The mix ratio of these concretes are based on mix design.

Grades of Concrete:

Conventional grades of concrete are M15, M20, M25 etc. in PCC Plain Cement Concrete construction mostly M15grade of concrete is used. In RCC reinforced cement concrete construction minimum M20 grade of concrete are used.
