Application & Uses of Cement

Uses of Cement

Cement is widely used in the construction of various structures. Without cement, construction is not possible. About 99.9% percent of construction has been done by cement. There are various types of Cement available in markets for different purposes. Various uses of cement in construction are given below:

  • Used for concrete
  • Used as a grouting
  • Cement mortar
  • Concrete Road
  • Precast structure
  • Aesthetic concrete structure
  • For chemical-proof structure
  • Fireproof structure

Uses of Cement

Concrete

Concrete

Concrete is prepared from cement, fine aggregate, coarse aggregate, and water. Concrete is used in the whole world because of its good and brilliant properties. It is used for the construction of buildings, roads, dams, bridges, retaining wall and spillway, etc. many types of cement can be used for the preparation of concrete. You should see a situation that which cement will be perfect but Generally ordinary Portland cement is using for the preparation of concrete.

Used as a Grouting

Grouting is used filling the cracks and joints. Generally, ordinary Portland cement is used to fill these cracks and joints. These joints and cracks must be filled with cement otherwise it will weaken the structure and can fail the structure.

Grouting

For grouting cement, sand and water is added. Sometimes only cement and water are mixed.

Cement Mortar

Cement mortar is a mixture of cement, sand, and water. It is widely used in masonry work, plastering, and for sealing the joints. Cement has high strength and water resisting properties. The most common ratio of cement and sand in cement mortar is:

1:2

1:3

1:4

1:5

1:6

In 1:2 the “1” denotes cement “2” denotes sand and the water-cement will be between 0.40 – 0.60 means no more than 0.60 but not less than 0.40.

Cement mortar is also used for the preparation of different shapes of molds.

Concrete Roads

Cement is used in concrete roads. A concrete road is also called a rigid pavement because of its rigidity. A concrete road is stronger than a flexible pavement road. The life span of the concrete roads is much more than a flexible pavement road. The maintenance of the concrete roads is high means very costly but concrete roads didn’t require maintenance very quickly.

Concrete Road

The concrete road is also able to bear the much high load than the flexible pavement road.to apply more load on the flexible pavement it will fail but concrete roads can bear that load which is high for the flexible pavement road.

Precast Structure

Precast Structure

In construction, the members of structure are already prepared. These members will just fix with the help of heavy machinery is called precast structure. Precast members are also prepared from the cement. Some members are prepared from the cement mortar. Cement mortar is a mixture of cement, sand, and water respectively. However, some members are prepared from concrete. Concrete is a mixture of cement, fine aggregate, coarse aggregate, and water. Precast concrete pipes are widely used as a drain, pipes under culverts, sewage purposes, etc.

Aesthetic Concrete Structure

Aesthetic Concrete Structure

Aesthetic concrete structures are used for a good architectural view. Cement is available in the market in many colors. The coloring agent is mix with cement while manufacturing of cement some of the coloring agents are iron oxide which gives red or brown, cobalt which gives blue, etc.

For Chemical Proof Structure

The different type of cement is used for a different type of chemical attack. Chemical proof structures are mostly used in chemical industries and under marine conditions. In chemical industries, a different type of chemical is stored. If there is no proper protection everything will be ruined so for this purpose chemical-proof structure is beneficial. For different chemical attacks, a different chemical-proof structure can be constructed for example under marine, sewage structure sulphate resistant cement is useful.

Fire Proof Structure

Concrete is a fireproof structure but some types of cement can resist very high temperatures. For high thermal temperature areas, high-temperature resistive cement is preferred for example manufacturing of steel. Alumina cement is more suitable to make concrete for the structure in a high-temperature region.
